Army of women

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Please consider registering as a volunteer at Army of Women.org. Researchers are seeking out healthy women to unlock the secrets of breast cancer. You can make a world of difference by volunteering to be matched with research studies and donate your time (and maybe your blood, or saliva, or medical history) to these studies.
I just [...]

Medical update

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

It’s a little silly for me to post this on Monday, because I have a doctor appointment with a specialist on Tuesday. However, I have a feeling I won’t have many answers on Tuesday, so it can’t hurt to keep you in the loop.
You may recall that I have had episodes of severe (super severe) [...]

The bigger picture

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

One positive note from all of this medical drama and the endless lab tests of the past two weeks. As reference, the “normal” range for cholesterol is 125-200, and the preferred range for triglycerides is less than 150.
October, 2006:
My Cholesterol: 211
My Triglycerides: 239
April, 2007:
My Cholesterol: 205
My Triglycerides: 519
Last week, September, 2008:
My Cholesterol: 166
My Triglycerides: 148
Unbelievable. [...]

How low?

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

I’m ready to admit just how low my morale has gotten this week.
Start with my ongoing medical problems (more on that after two ultrasounds and a doctor follow-up visit tomorrow), the fact that I probably have PMS, and large-scale fallout from the financial crisis of a few of weeks ago. I feel wiped out. [...]

More on math

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

I am NOT a girl who goes for cliches or trite sayings, and the weight-loss world (if there is such a thing) is full of them. My primary problem is that most of them seem so negative and belittling. I mean, consider exhibit A:
A moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips.
On the surface, [...]

Nothing more than feelings

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Vickie, on a previous post, reminded me about the importance of momentum when you are working toward a goal. Then, she asked:
It sounds as if you are feeling empowered. do you feel that way???
I don’t know if I would have used the word “empowered” to describe this whole process so far. I would say that [...]

If I had a hammer

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

There was a time when a delivery like this would inspire awe and reverence in me; when I would have thought, “My very salvation has arrived.” In the past, I would look to a piece of equipment this large and powerful and assign to it all of my hopes and dreams for change. Here is [...]

Like it or not

Friday, May 30th, 2008

When I decided to go back to Weight Watchers, I committed to myself that I would “shop around” for a meeting leader who wouldn’t make me want to gouge out my eyes with a bookmark and choke myself with a Points Finder ™. Since the WW “plan” is more of a guideline for me and [...]

What you see/get

Monday, May 26th, 2008

I know from experience that it takes around 30-35 pounds before people start to notice that I’ve lost weight. So, it shouldn’t surprise me that several people have commented to me in the past week or so that I look like I have, well, en-small-ened myself a bit. No, it shouldn’t surprise me, but it [...]

Spud Wars

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

I went grocery shopping last weekend to stock the house with things other than take-out wrappers and chocolate chip cookies. In doing so, my goal was to have healthy meal options that were easy to prepare after a long day of work (oh, convenience, you are my downfall). I packed my shopping cart full of [...]

An experiment.
