Baby steps reminder
Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy Did you see this story on Friday morning’s Today Show? This guy lost over 400 pounds in 5+ years. Okay. That’s a good story — although I’m somewhat annoyed by a personality that chooses to call the local TV station in search of weight loss help, but whatever… I’m also always interested by people who lose a bunch of weight and then become personal trainers. (This happens to Biggest Loser contestants a lot, I notice.) Honestly, I have a really satisfying, fulfilling life that I have...

I’m remembering how much forethought, planning, and preparation goes into eating healthy. It really does take a lot of time to make sure you’ve got good food at home, that you pack your lunch for tomorrow, and that you are constantly aware of what is in the refrigerator and what can be cooked and eaten at any given moment. It takes a lot of work. And a LOT of dishes. Here is a snippet of the email from my WW leader: “Oh wow – how weird is this!! Instead, I studied for my licensure exam and had a bowl of berries with milk. I am considering this a victory.

More bullet points: Going home triggers my binges. This is a simple, somewhat-obvious thing to say, but it bears saying. One of the traditions at my house is to not talk about things — not even big, serious, or scary things — and I think I have used food over the years to “swallow” my words down. I may not go home for Christmas. Still deciding on that one. Sugar/refined carbs make me feel better for about an hour, then quickly sap me of energy. I have a high-stress life and I need my energy. I owe it to my patients to be the best therapist that I can. I am hoping to...

Bullet points today. This might be a new trend as my thoughts seem to be coming in chunks. I was indeed able to maintain my weight under 289 for many months, and then I made the decision to travel to my parents’ house and help my mom sort through her secret, hoarded stash of fabric and art supplies. That’s when the world exploded. I binged my way back up to 300 pounds. Boom. I have come to an important realization. It is no coincidence that I lost nearly 80 pounds during a year when I did not visit home. Not even for Christmas. I need to do more soul-searching about this, but...
